What is Genital Herpes / Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)?

  • Genital Herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection in the US.  Genital Herpes is usually caused by HSV-2 but increasingly more cases are being detected by HSV-1.  HSV infections are transmitted by the HSV virus from contact with an infected partner.  Usually, lesions are not present during the time of contact and often individuals are not aware that they are infected and possibly shedding the virus.  Many individuals remain asymptomatic.

What are symptoms of Genital Herpes?

Most of the time, individuals may have no symptoms and no lesions or skin condition that is mild and mistaken for something else.  Typical presentation is of small blisters or vesicles in the genital area or the mouth.  The lesions may eventually break and result in an ulcer type lesion which can be painful.  Usually initial herpes infections may also include fever, bodyaches and flu-like symptoms.

Who Should Get Tested?

  • The CDC recommends yearly testing for all sexually active adults, but generally it is best to get tested if you:

    • have had or are planning to have sex with a new partner
    • have multiple sexual partners

Questions?

  • What is an STI panel, and why should I consider getting one?

What is an STI panel, and why should I consider getting one?

An STI panel, or sexually transmitted infection panel, is a comprehensive set of tests designed to detect various sexually transmitted infections. Getting an STI panel is crucial for anyone sexually active, as it helps identify and treat infections early, preventing potential health complications and transmission to partners.

  • What infections are included in an STI panel?

What infections are included in an STI panel?

Our STI Panel is taken in the privacy of your own home, and the test covers many common sexually transmitted diseases including:

    • Chlamydia
    • Gonorrhea
    • Syphilis
    • Trichomonas
    • Herpes Simplex Virus 1 & 2

  • How often should I get an STI panel?

How often should I get an STI panel?

The frequency of necessary testing really varies based on how sexually active you are and if you’re currently outside of a monogamous relationship. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends every 3-12 months depending on risk category, but most medical professionals would agree that a yearly STI test is the minimum responsible frequency and testing should be done more if -- and when -- you engage in unprotected sex with a new partner. Preventing the spread of STIs and STDs is everybody’s responsibility and knowing your status is a great way to do your part while also keeping yourself and your partner(s) healthy.

Various risk factors are linked with a greater likelihood of getting an STI. These include the following:

    • Age - According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 15–24 year old's account for half of all new sexually transmitted infections.
    • Biological sex - Young people assigned female at birth are more biologically susceptible to many sexually transmitted infections than those assigned male at birth at the same age.
    • Sexual behaviors - Certain behaviors, like having unprotected sex, can heighten the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection.
    • Substance use - Among sexually active people, using drugs or alcohol is linked with a greater likelihood of contracting a sexually transmitted infection.
    • Sex partners - The risk of getting an STI increases the more sex partners you have and if you have sex with someone who has an STI.

How to know if you have an STI?

Our at-home STI Genital Lesion Panel gives you an accurate, confidential STI check that can help you discover if your symptoms may be the result of sexually transmitted infections—allowing you to get the right treatment as soon as possible.

  • Do I need an STI panel if I use protection or have no symptoms?

Do I need an STI panel if I use protection or have no symptoms?

Yes, getting an STI panel is still important even if you use protection or have no noticeable symptoms. Condoms and other protective measures reduce the risk but do not eliminate it entirely. Many STIs can be asymptomatic, so testing is the only way to know for sure.

  • What guidance will I get along with my results?

What guidance will I get along with my results?

The STI test checks whether or not you test positive for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases. In the event that your test results are abnormal, a board-certified physician is available to discuss your particular case and prescribe medication where applicable by booking an Sexual Health Consultation online at appliDX.com.

In rare cases, you may not receive a definitive result because of short post-exposure time or inadequate sampling. These results do not mean that your results are going to be abnormal, it just means that the testing was unable to provide a clear answer at this time, and repeat testing is suggested.

  • Is my information kept confidential when I get an STI panel?

Is my information kept confidential when I get an STI panel?

Yes, healthcare providers prioritize patient confidentiality. Your STI test results are kept confidential and shared only with you and authorized healthcare personnel. Your privacy is protected.

  • Are STI panels covered by insurance?

Are STI panels covered by insurance?

The coverage of STI panels by insurance can vary depending on your plan and location. It's advisable to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage and any associated costs.
